For years, Nasir El-Rufai has played the role of a political enigma, one moment, he positions himself as a reformer, the next, he emerges as a ruthless strategist, all while keeping the masses in a constant state of confusion. But behind his dramatic behaviour one thing remains clear, that his political moves have never been about the people; they have always been about himself.
His latest defection from the APC
to the SDP is just another act in his long running political drama that we are
used to, those in APC shouldn’t be scared but should be alerted and know that
it is a desperate attempt to stay relevant while misleading the public into
believing he’s making some grand and selfless sacrifice. But the pattern is old.
This is the same El-Rufai who was a founding member of the CPC before helping
to form the APC, I couldn’t recall but he
seems to be their secretary, all in pursuit of power. Now that the APC no longer
serves his interests, he suddenly finds a new home. Are we supposed to believe
this is about principle? Are we? Before we exhaust the energy in answering let
think of it a bit.
If he claims he’s doing it for
the North, let’s not forget that he was one of the loudest voices insisting
that a Northern candidate shouldn’t be considered for the presidency in 2023.
When it suited him, he pushed a Southern candidate forward, Tinubu of course and
now, when it no longer benefits him, he’s trying to sell a new story. Not
everyone is a fool oga. If it’s about religion, then who has a more consistent
history of demolishing mosques than El-Rufai? In Abuja, during his time as FCT Minister, he
oversaw the destruction of numerous mosques under the guise of urban planning.
Even in Kaduna, where he held absolute power as governor, one incidence that
still bothers me is the Murtala Square Mosque were I frequent almost daily, the
mosque was demolished, and instead of rebuilding it, he conveniently removed
the idea of a mosque entirely from the new design choosing instead to build other structures perceived to be hotels.
This is a man who has
consistently weaponized ethnic and religious narratives for political gain. He
knows exactly when to play the victim and when to play the villain. He speaks
of justice, yet he thrives on division. He talks about development, yet his
policies have often left more destruction than progress.
The truth is simple, El-Rufai is not fighting for the North,
for Islam, or for any ideological cause. He is fighting for himself. Every move
he makes is calculated for personal gain. His latest political maneuver is
nothing more than a distraction, designed to keep people guessing while he
secures his next position of influence. But the people must not be deceived
again. Any way you can choose to be, and if you do that the question remains
how many times will you allow yourselves to be manipulated
by the same man?
